The field of Communication Studies and the research that defines it are diverse. This course focuses on social scientific, empirical, and/or quantitative approaches to the study of speech communication. To be capable of reading, understanding, utilizing, and conducting the field's research, you must be conversant with the diverse methods used to generate knowledge. The course surveys the major research designs and research techniques that are at the core of contemporary approaches to the scientific analysis of communicative phenomena. Major topics covered include the principles of causal inference, experimental and quasi-experimental designs, measurement theory and methods, and statistical analytic techniques.
