Newswriting and Reporting 

This course emphasizes the reporting, writing and editing skills that make up the foundations of storytelling across media platforms. Explores techniques used to research and report complex social, political, and economic issues. Outcomes include researching, reporting, and writing stories suitable for publication, under deadline. 3 credits. Perquisite: JAMS 201 Fundamentals of Journalism OR COM 383 Journalism.

Course Objectives: Upon successfully completing this course, you will be able to:

Continuation of journalism principals, standards, and ethics.

Recognize and define good news reporting, on a variety of media platforms, after extensive review of news stories and a variety of news stories written and presented under deadline.

Define a variety of components necessary for good journalism – with particular emphasis on writing.

Continue to develop skills for reporting, writing and delivering news reports with a variety of news stories written and presented under deadline. 

Demonstrate an awareness of the First Amendment principles and the laws appropriate to

professional journalistic practice.

Demonstrate how to be an honest, truthful, ethical and professional journalist.
