This course focuses on the use of multiple representations to Algebraic thinking in grades K-6. Students move from the concrete level with manipulatives to the connecting and abstract levels. Current developments in the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Standards are highlight, offering new materials and technology to enhance instruction. This course will heighten awareness for the power of manipulative usage in the classroom at all levels of instruction. Participants will identify how to use cognitive demand to address academic rigor as it applies to algebraic concepts. Participants have the opportunity to discuss mathematics, pedagogy in order to modify the activities for their particular grade level.
