Course Description: In this introductory course, students use developmentally-appropriate observation and record keeping strategies to reflect upon, improve, maintain, and extend learning.  Tools and techniques that promote growth across all domains of early childhood development—social-emotional, cognitive, physical, linguistic, and across other content areas—will be discussed and explored. This course includes a 10 hour on site observation requirement.

 

Course Objectives:

  1. Explain the connections between assessment, child development, and developmentally appropriate practices.
  2. Identify and describe informal and formal forms of assessments typically used in Early childhood settings.
  3. Describe the important role informal and formal assessments play in teaching and instruction.
  4. Apply analysis and reflection to teaching practices to meet the individual, developmental, and cultural needs of each child.
