Course Description: In this introductory course, students use developmentally-appropriate observation and record keeping strategies to reflect upon, improve, maintain, and extend learning. Tools and techniques that promote growth across all domains of early childhood development—social-emotional, cognitive, physical, linguistic, and across other content areas—will be discussed and explored. This course includes a 10 hour on site observation requirement.
Course Objectives:
- Explain the connections between assessment, child development, and developmentally appropriate practices.
- Identify and describe informal and formal forms of assessments typically used in Early childhood settings.
- Describe the important role informal and formal assessments play in teaching and instruction.
- Apply analysis and reflection to teaching practices to meet the individual, developmental, and cultural needs of each child.
