Course Description: This course stresses developmentally appropriate practices specific to any early childhood education setting.

Goals: Teaching reading in early childhood education, emphasizing developmentally appropriate active learning related to the reading process, Prek- third grade.  This course will focus on critical examination of current practices, content, procedures and materials for beginning reading through third grade.  The student will:

  • Become familiar with theories of reading, literacy and language development in early childhood education

  • Develop an understanding of the connections between reading/writing and other curriculum areas

  • Demonstrate knowledge of current research, best practices and professional growth through readings, assignments, media and discussions

    Instructional Objectives:
    By the end of the course the student will be able to:

  • Describe past and present issues and trends in the teaching of reading

  • Understand the stages of literacy acquisition  and the connection between reading and writing and other curriculum areas

  • Demonstrate methods of identifying and assessing progress in the process of literacy acquisition

  • Identify developmentally appropriate methods and materials to support literacy acquisition

  • Understand the importance of the home-school connection in supporting children
